The guest list. Cap it at 35-40 guest, mostly relatives and very close friends. A great way to cutback on the overhead cost of a reception hall, is to have a sit down dinner, at a mid-range price restaurant, after a late afternoon ceremony.

The key is to phone in the reservations in smaller groups to avoid service fees. The sit-down dinner theme allows the individual table groups to pay for their own dinner checks. For them the expense is nothing more than a night out for dinner, for you the collective cost is huge. Besides, this is your family and closest friends right?

Contrary to what most people might think, a Hawaii destination wedding typically costs less than a traditional in-town wedding. Destination weddings tend to be smaller affairs, which cuts down on the per-person cost, but there are still some expenses to be aware of.

 

1.  Transportation

o    Flights: from $400/roundtrip from the West Coast

Accommodations

o    Since all of your guests will probably be from out of town, they will need accommodations. Most hotels will offer a discount to groups. Traditionally the bride and groom pay for the wedding party's rooms.

o    Hotel: from $120/night – visit expedia.com

Food

o    Reception aside, you will need to eat throughout your stay. If the place you are staying has a kitchen, you can stock up on food; otherwise, plan on eating out for all your meals.

o    Breakfast: from $7/person

o    Lunch: from $12/person

In-Town Transportation

o    Unless the wedding is held at the hotel where everyone is staying, you will need to arrange transportation. Guests can arrange their own transportation from the airport, but traditionally the bride and groom provide transportation the day of the wedding.

It has the most night life in Kailua Town and hotels in the surrounding area. Distances between populated areas on the island can be significant and several hours should be planned for exploring each region of the island.

Tips about getting married in Hawaii...

Any advice/tips about getting married in Hawaii—the best seasons and the best locations for each island, etc.?

The autumn months tend to offer the fewest visitors, lowest hotel rates and airfares.
Many times, our clients getting married in Hawaii are concerned about the “rainy season”. Hawaii does not have a rainy season in the same sense some other locations around the world do. Hawaii does get more rain in the winter than in the summer and temperatures in winter are 5-10 degrees cooler than in summer, averaging in the low 80s year round. But due to the isolated location of the islands and the high elevations of the mountains, clouds are blown in daily by the northerly trade winds, trapped high up against the mountains where they build and result in rain deep in the valleys, providing the water to drive spectacular waterfalls. Most often, the beach areas of the islands are clear and sunny, resulting in frequent rainbows, sometimes double and triple rainbows. Visitors to the islands increase in summer months primarily due to school schedules, but so do hotel rates and airfare, while the autumn months tend to offer the fewest visitors, lowest hotel rates and airfares. Anytime of the year is the best time for Hawaii.

My favorite Hawaiian island...

People often ask me if I favor one island more than the rest. All Hawaiian islands are beautiful; however, if I must choose one island, I would say that Kauai is one of my most favorite island in Hawaii.

Kauai is one of the most romantic islands, layered in lush vegetation where you can feel like you are in Bora Bora, Tahiti, while being far more affordable than Tahiti. It's also one of the best kept secrets, making it one of the less crowded islands. It does get more rain than Oahu and Maui. In fact, it is home to Mount Wai’ale’ale, the wettest spot on Earth; however, we appreciate the rain as much as we appreciate the green hillsides throughout the island. It's just like being in Jurassic Park minus the T-Rex.

How to get married in Hawaii

Hawaii is a beautiful place and a marriage here is an ideal way for a couple to start life together. You may be a visitor to the Islands, drawn to our year-round warm and sunny weather, or you may be a resident wishing to celebrate a most cherished moment in a place that you call home. Whoever you are, we welcome you and hope that we can make your wedding day as free from worry as possible. Aloha and best wishes!

When my (now) husband and I decided to get married, we didn't even know where to start.  We didn't want to spend $5,000 for the wedding venue alone.  So, we decided to elope (but where?).  First place came to mind was Las Vegas (with an Elvis impersonator marrying us?, NO!!!).  Then, Jamaica (wait a minute, what would happen to our legal marriage document, would it be in English or some foreign language?)... 

Then, we came up with Maui.  Now, where do I find a minister to perform our ceremony on an island full of vacationers and timeshares?  Since the internet was our friend, we started searching online.  OMG, there are ten or so names popping up...  If you are wondering what keywords we chose, we typed "getting married in Maui" and then "getting married in Hawaii".  We chose one wedding planner who didn't charge an arm and a leg.

They set up an appointment with a marriage license agent.  Two months later, we showed up with our wedding rings and two valid driver licenses.  We met with a marriage license agent in Kihei and spent fifteen minutes or so with her.  We walked out with our marriage license.  Two days later, we presented our license to our minister who performed our wedding and submitted it to the State of Hawaii.  Just like that...

For any person to lawfully marry in the State of Hawaii, a license for that purpose must be obtained from an authorized agent (Section 572-1.7, Hawaii Revised Statutes). Once the license has been issued, there is no waiting period before the marriage can take place.

A marriage license and marriage certificate are different documents. The marriage license permits a marriage to take place. The marriage certificate indicates that a legal marriage has been performed.
The marriage certificate is prepared and filed by your licensed marriage officiant or performer with the Department of Health. A newly married couple receives one (1) certified copy of the marriage certificate at no extra charge, upon payment of the marriage license fee, which will be sent to the couple by mail (60-120 days) after the marriage has been performed. If a marriage certificate is needed sooner than this, you can apply for one or more additional certified copies.
